Cambridge and Norwich both feature in a new Tech Nation report which has been published today. The report, which is the largest ever study of the UK’s digital sector, shows that inner London has been ousted from its place at the heart of the digital industry.
The UK is currently home to more start-ups than ever before. Last year, more than 500,000 new companies were created, up from 484,224 the year before. Whilst Bournemouth tops the poll, Cambridge and Norwich both feature in the list of fastest growing cities. In Norwich, 13% of all companies created in 2013/4 were digital companies compared to 10% in Cambridge.
Looking at a wider timeframe between 2010 and 2014, there has been a 46% rise in the growth of new digital companies in Cambridge and at 21% rise in Norwich.
Both cities have shown that their proximity to London coupled with high levels of skilled staff has resulted in significant growth in digital business for the East Anglia region.
With an influx of digital companies and the opportunities created by these businesses, it will be interesting to track the growth of the regions PR agencies to support the publicity needs of these new businesses.
Perhaps this is just the opportunity the region needs to demonstrate how strong and talented the PR practitioner pool is outside the capital as well.
